My Marriage is not Made in Heaven

Is marriage made in heaven? If you google this question, you will find many articles and opinions about this subject. Perhaps if you are married, you would like to know if your marriage is made in heaven. Or if you have the intention of getting married one day, you would like to know if there is a marriage made in heaven for you. Then there is the question, if there are marriages made in heaven, what happens if mine wasn´t made in heaven? Or how can I make sure that the marriage that I am going to commit to in the future is from heaven?

If it were possible that marriages are made in heaven, what would that mean to you? What would that look like to you? Some might say, “Well, it´s probably a perfect marriage where there are no arguments, and the spouses practically float on clouds in their home due to the elevated heavenly living”. Others, perhaps those who have the tendency of “keeping their feet on the ground”, might say something like, “God created plutonium too, but it is one of the most dangerous natural elements that exists”. Let me give you an idea of “how” dangerous plutonium is, something that was created by God just like marriage is, but many times wrongly utilized, depending upon in whose hands it´s in.

The biggest and worse of all the naturally occurring elements is plutonium with an atomic number of 94. As well as being highly radioactive this element is also toxic like other heavy metals are. Inhalation is the most harmful route for plutonium exposure and one estimate suggests 500g of plutonium dust released into the air would be sufficient to kill nearly 2 million people. In addition to these toxic qualities plutonium is also the material of choice for nuclear weapons. Consider the one-kilogram of pure plutonium; it contains sufficient energy to power a major city for several hours. It is also sufficient to make a 10-kiloton explosion, i.e. the same as 10,000 tons of conventional explosives. This is about half the size of the Hiroshima bomb. Think about this, a natural element, created by God for good purposes, more powerful than any other natural element, can give energy to a city or it can destroy it. It all depends upon “in whose” hands it´s in and what intentions of its use. So it is with marriage. God established it, because He saw that it was not good for man to be alone. So He took “something” from man´s side and formed woman. That means there is “something”, that man no longer has. God placed it in the woman. But at the same time, man kept elements that were not used to form woman. We could say that God created the co-being of man when he formed the woman. In that relationship of marriage, between man and woman, there is the potential of being devoted one to another to constitute “one”. I’m not talking about losing our identity, your unique design or your own free will. I am referring to the potential and the possibilities that are within a covenant marriage.

A biblical marriage is a covenant made before God between a man and a woman (biologically born), who commit one to another for the rest of their lives. Marriage established by God was designed this way, and it not only carries the seal of heaven but the grace and power to carry out that commitment to fulfill its eternal purpose. A marriage that is devoted to the purposes of God has enough potential that it can change the course of thousands of generations, affecting human history forever.

When is comes to marriage, it´s not a question of whether it is “made in heaven” or not. It all depends upon “in whose” hands it’s in and the use that is given to that covenant relationship. The quality and destiny of a marriage depends upon the mutual responsibility of the spouses to care for and give the best use of that covenant relationship. It has to do with the man and the woman who made that decision to “give” their lives one to another and to their marriage purpose. That marriage has access to the blessing of God to prosper in every good thing.

The word “gives” means to put in the hands or power of another person. It also means to take or transport to its destiny. That is powerful. A marriage that is given one to another can surrender their marriage to God and together, transport it to its destiny. There is no other way to bring your marriage to its destiny without that kind of commitment and without having God as the center. It is not just an emotional of physical surrendering. It is giving your heart, your intentions, your words and your service to the wellbeing that heaven has for it.

I am fully convinced that every marriage can lay hold of heaven’s design no matter what the past. I am also fully conscious that we live our marriages here on earth and without the determination to live our relationships “as in heaven”; it will be difficult to transport our marriages to where God wants them. Your commitment, your dedication and your determination for your marriage are some of the most valuable things that you can give your spouse.

These three elements have a bonding so powerful that when your marriage is lived with the measure of faith that God has given you, nothing or no one will be able to separate you from God’s eternal plans. Your marriage is powerful in God and has the potential to build those great dreams that God has deposited within your lives. If you keep your marriage in the hands of God, be assured that you will have everything that you need to confront every difficulty. If you leave your marriage adrift or in the hands of the world´s influence, your marriage is in danger of not arriving to its destiny. Your marriage is designed in heaven but built here on earth by you.

22 For wives, this means being supportive to your husbands like you are tenderly devoted to our Lord, 23 for the husband provides leadership for the wife, just as Christ provides leadership for his church, as the Savior and Reviver of the body. 24 In the same way the church is devoted to Christ, let the wives be devoted to their husbands in everything. 25 And to the husbands, you are to demonstrate love for your wives with the same tender devotion that Christ demonstrated to us, his bride. For he died for us, sacrificing himself. Ephesians 5:22 – 25 TPT

Whoever finds a wife finds good,
and receives favor from Adonai. Proverbs 18:22 TLV

A virtuous wife is her husband’s crown,
but a dishonoring one is like rottenness in his bones.
Proverbs 12:4 TLV

Commitment, dedication and determination are some of the most valuable elements that you can give to your spouse.
Place your marriage in the proper hands, the hands of God.
